Voyage Margin Calculator for Freight Revenue Estimates

The Tide Signal Voyage Margin Calculator helps estimate freight revenue and voyage economics from a simple commercial shipping calculation. The core calculation starts with cargo quantity in metric tons multiplied by the freight rate in USD per metric ton. From that gross freight amount, the tool deducts broker commission, address commission and estimated voyage costs.

This makes the calculator useful for quick chartering analysis, shipping business education, voyage review and freight sensitivity checks. Instead of only showing gross freight revenue, the tool also estimates net freight, total voyage costs, voyage margin, margin per metric ton and break-even freight rate.

Freight Revenue, Commissions and Voyage Costs

A voyage may look attractive at gross freight level but become weaker after commissions and operating costs are considered. Broker commission and address commission are calculated as percentages of gross freight. Bunker cost, port costs, canal or transit costs and other voyage expenses are then deducted from net freight to produce an indicative voyage margin.

The break-even freight rate is one of the most useful outputs because it shows the approximate USD per metric ton required for the voyage to cover commissions and voyage costs. This helps users compare whether a quoted freight rate is comfortably above, close to or below the estimated break-even level.

Freight Rate Scenario Table

The scenario table compares nearby freight rates around the entered base rate. This gives a clearer commercial view of how sensitive the voyage is to small freight movements. A difference of one or two dollars per metric ton can materially change the estimated voyage margin, especially on larger cargo quantities.

Important Calculation Disclaimer

This calculator provides indicative estimates only. Actual voyage economics depend on charter party terms, freight payment structure, load and discharge port costs, bunker consumption, vessel performance, canal dues, waiting time, demurrage or dispatch, exchange rates and other commercial details. The output should not replace official fixture calculations, owner instructions, broker advice or company voyage estimates.
