How the Voyage ETA Calculation Works
The basic calculation uses voyage distance in nautical miles and average vessel speed in knots. Because one knot equals one nautical mile per hour, the tool calculates sea time by dividing practical voyage distance by average speed. A weather or routing allowance can be added as a percentage to increase the practical sailing distance.
Sea Time vs Sea ETA
Sea time shows the estimated duration of the sea passage. Sea ETA is shown only when a departure date and time are entered. This keeps the calculator flexible: users can calculate a voyage duration without entering dates, or add a departure time when they need an estimated arrival window.
Weather and Routing Allowance
Weather, routing changes, traffic separation schemes, speed restrictions and operational routing decisions can increase the practical sailing distance. The weather allowance field allows users to add a simple percentage to the voyage distance for a more conservative estimate.
Fuel, Bunker Cost and Speed Scenarios
Fuel and bunker calculations are optional. If daily consumption is entered, the calculator estimates total fuel consumption over the calculated sea time. If bunker price is also entered, the tool estimates total bunker cost and fuel cost per nautical mile. The speed scenario table helps compare nearby speeds and shows how speed can affect time, fuel and cost.
Why Port Waiting Is Not Included
This calculator focuses on sea passage ETA and practical sailing distance. Port waiting, congestion, berth availability, pilotage delays and operational restrictions should be assessed separately, because they depend on local port conditions, terminal instructions, charterparty context and commercial arrangements.
