China Golden Week 2026 Shipping: Dates, Blank Sailings and What Importers Need to Know

China’s 2026 National Day Golden Week runs from October 1 to 7, but shipping disruption begins before the holiday. Carriers have already announced blank sailings across Asia–Europe and Transpacific services, while importers and exporters face a narrow pre-holiday window for bookings, cargo handover, documentation and feeder connections

Forward Shipping AlertChina · 1–7 October 2026Container Operations

China Golden Week 2026 shipping disruption is already beginning before the October holiday starts. China’s National Day holiday runs from 1 to 7 October 2026, but Maersk, MSC and Hapag-Lloyd have already announced blank sailings and network adjustments across Asia–Europe and Transpacific services.

The 2026 calendar makes the pre-holiday window especially tight. China’s official Mid-Autumn Festival holiday runs from 25 to 27 September, leaving only three normal weekdays — 28, 29 and 30 September — before National Day Golden Week begins.

Quick answer

Golden Week runs from 1–7 October 2026. The main shipping risk is not a blanket seven-day closure of every Chinese port. The risk is the interaction between factory shutdowns or reduced staffing, changed feeder and local logistics arrangements, and carrier capacity management through blank sailings. Importers and exporters should verify the actual operating sailing, alternative service, empty-container pickup, feeder availability, terminal cut-offs, SI and VGM deadlines.

China Golden Week 2026 Dates: October 1–7

China’s official State Council holiday schedule confirms that the National Day holiday runs from Thursday, 1 October through Wednesday, 7 October 2026. The schedule also designates 20 September and 10 October as adjusted working days.

The same official calendar places the Mid-Autumn Festival on 25–27 September. For export planning, that creates an unusually compressed late-September sequence.

25–27 September — Mid-Autumn Festival

Three-day official holiday.

28–30 September — three normal weekdays

The narrow operating window before Golden Week.

1–7 October — National Day Golden Week

Official seven-day holiday.

10 October — adjusted working Saturday

Officially designated working day.

See the official 2026 public holiday calendar.

Why this matters now: the Mid-Autumn holiday has already begun. Exporters then have only 28–30 September before Golden Week. A missed production handover, feeder connection or document deadline is therefore harder to recover.

Why Golden Week Changes Shipping Before October 1

Golden Week is not only a calendar event. It changes the timing of production, cargo handover, trucking, equipment use and ocean capacity.

Maersk says it is balancing its network around forecast reductions in demand and a reduced workforce to handle cargo operations. That means two opposite effects can exist at once: pre-holiday cargo can rush toward the final operating sailings, while carriers remove post-holiday capacity because they expect a temporary fall in export demand.

The correct model is therefore:

  • before Golden Week: cargo can be front-loaded and selected sailings can tighten;
  • during and immediately after Golden Week: factories and logistics staffing can be lower while carriers blank vessel positions;
  • after the holiday: cargo, vessels and port calls can bunch as the network normalises.

Golden Week Blank Sailings: What the Latest Data Shows

Drewry’s 24 September World Container Index update says carriers have announced 15 Transpacific blank sailings for next week, compared with nine in the current week.

Drewry’s broader cancelled-sailings tracker had already counted 77 blank sailings from week 39 through week 43 across 720 planned East–West sailings, an 11% cancellation rate. Those 77 cancellations are not all caused by Golden Week; the period also reflects wider network and geopolitical disruption.

See Drewry’s 24 September WCI update and its Cancelled Sailings Tracker.

Important: a blank sailing does not always mean a shipment has no alternative. Carriers may rebook cargo, add inducement calls or move boxes to another loop. But the substitute may have a different port rotation, cut-off, transit time or available space.

Maersk Golden Week 2026: Confirmed Network Changes

Maersk’s Far East Asia–Europe Golden Week advisory lists these blankings:

WeekServiceFirst load portETD
40AE15Qingdao28 Sep 2026
41AE12Ningbo8 Oct 2026
41AE1Shanghai10 Oct 2026

The first change is scheduled for 28 September — three days before Golden Week officially begins.

Maersk has also published a Transpacific Golden Week adjustment, including TP8 eastbound from Busan and TP12 eastbound from Ningbo with proforma blanking dates on 9 October. The carrier says alternative sailings and inducement calls will support port coverage.

MSC Golden Week 2026: Asia–Europe and Asia–USA

MSC says it is adjusting capacity because of the anticipated demand slowdown during Golden Week.

On Asia–US West Coast, MSC has separately announced blankings on Orient in week 40 and Pearl in week 41. See the Asia–USA advisory.

Hapag-Lloyd Golden Week 2026: No-Sailings and Local China Policies

Hapag-Lloyd’s Far East–Europe Golden Week update lists no-sailing positions including:

TradeServicePortDeparture
Asia–North EuropeNE2Shanghai10 Oct 2026
Asia–MediterraneanSE3Qingdao28 Sep 2026
Asia–MediterraneanSE1Ningbo8 Oct 2026

Hapag-Lloyd also provides alternative voyages, including SE4 from Qingdao on 1 October.

Its current China local notice page shows separate Golden Week notices covering temporary holiday policy changes, South China free storage, export empty-container pickup timing and South China feeder-service suspensions.

Check the live Hapag-Lloyd China local notifications before relying on normal local handling arrangements.

This is often the hidden Golden Week risk: the mainline booking may remain active while the feeder, empty-container pickup window, storage arrangement or cargo handover changes underneath it.

Container Rates Before Golden Week

Drewry’s World Container Index decreased 1% to $4,468 per 40ft on 24 September. Shanghai–Los Angeles increased 2% to $7,838, while Shanghai–New York remained at $10,373.

Drewry nevertheless expects rates to decrease in the following week ahead of Golden Week. That matters because more blank sailings do not automatically mean higher freight rates. If cargo demand falls faster than carriers remove capacity, the market can soften.

For the rate market, use Tide Signal’s Container Shipping Rates hub and Transpacific Container Rates analysis. This Golden Week URL deliberately owns operational timing rather than generic rates.

Factory Closures, Warehouses and Local Logistics

The official holiday does not tell an importer the exact closure dates of an individual Chinese factory. Suppliers, warehouses and trucking providers can make their own operating arrangements around the public holiday.

Importers should confirm directly:

  • last factory production date before Golden Week;
  • actual cargo-ready date;
  • packing and warehouse availability;
  • export documentation support;
  • trucking and feeder availability;
  • first realistic post-holiday restart date;
  • whether the nominated vessel still operates.

Do not write “all Chinese ports close for Golden Week.” Port, terminal, trucking, feeder and support arrangements vary. The documented industry issue is reduced workforce availability, altered local operations and carrier capacity adjustments.

Bookings and Lead Times: Work Backwards From Cargo Ready

A booking confirmation is only one link in the chain. Golden Week can change the vessel, voyage week, feeder, transshipment connection, empty pickup, gate-in window or documentation deadline.

For time-critical cargo, work backwards from:

  1. vessel ETD;
  2. terminal gate-in / CY cut-off;
  3. VGM cut-off;
  4. shipping-instruction cut-off;
  5. customs requirements;
  6. container stuffing;
  7. empty-container pickup;
  8. factory cargo-ready date.

Best operational habit: treat each Golden Week shipment as a chain of deadlines, not a single vessel departure date.

Shipping Instructions, VGM and Export Documents

There is no single national Golden Week SI or VGM cut-off. Deadlines are carrier-, voyage-, port- and terminal-specific. A blank sailing or rebooking can therefore create a new document timeline.

Verify before the holiday:

  • Shipping Instructions (SI);
  • Verified Gross Mass (VGM);
  • customs declaration timing;
  • dangerous-goods declarations where applicable;
  • reefer instructions where applicable;
  • gate-in / CY cut-off;
  • Bill of Lading draft approval;
  • local holiday office and documentation-service changes.

Dangerous-goods cargo remains subject to normal classification, documentation, stowage and segregation rules. Tide Signal’s SOLAS Chapter VII / IMDG Code guide explains the framework.

China Golden Week 2026 Importer and Exporter Checklist

Importers

  • Confirm the supplier’s real closure dates, not only the statutory holiday.
  • Get a written cargo-ready date and separate production completion from export readiness.
  • Re-check the vessel and voyage for a blank sailing or omission.
  • Request the alternative sailing now for time-sensitive cargo.
  • Verify feeder availability, especially from South China and secondary origins.
  • Check empty pickup and gate-in timing.
  • Reconfirm SI, VGM and customs cut-offs.
  • Add post-holiday buffer to ETA planning.

Exporters

  • confirm factory, warehouse and trucking staffing for 28–30 September;
  • identify cargo that must depart before October 1;
  • verify mainline and feeder schedules separately;
  • check equipment availability before packing;
  • submit SI and VGM within the revised voyage cut-offs;
  • keep alternative services ready for blanked voyages;
  • prioritise reefer, DG, high-value and time-sensitive cargo.

Europe-Bound Cargo: Golden Week Meets a Changing Suez Network

Europe-bound cargo faces more than the holiday itself. Carrier Golden Week blankings are arriving while Asia–Europe networks are also adjusting to changing Suez routing and European terminal pressure.

See Tide Signal’s Suez Canal Shipping Returns analysis for the downstream risk of vessel bunching and compressed berth windows.

US-Bound Cargo: Strong Rates, Fewer Sailings, Different Risk

The Transpacific enters Golden Week with very high route rates and active carrier capacity management. The relevant question is not only the spot price. It is which sailing will operate, when cargo must be ready, and what alternative remains if the booked position is blanked.

What to Watch From September 25 to October 10

SignalWhy it matters
Carrier blank-sailing revisionsShows whether more capacity is being removed or restored.
Alternative voyage spaceA cancellation is less disruptive if the substitute sailing can absorb cargo.
China feeder noticesMainline cargo can still be delayed by regional feeder suspensions.
Empty-container pickup rulesEquipment timing can determine whether cargo can be stuffed before the holiday.
Drewry WCIShows whether capacity reductions are enough to support rates.
Post-holiday bookingsThe first demand test after October 7 will show how much September demand was front-loaded.
Port congestionVessels and cargo can bunch as networks restart.

Tide Signal analysis: the highest operational risk is the transition around Golden Week — cargo rushed before the holiday, capacity deliberately removed during the demand dip, and multiple services trying to normalise after October 7.

China Golden Week 2026 Shipping FAQ

When is China Golden Week in 2026?

China’s National Day holiday runs from 1 to 7 October 2026.

Are Chinese ports closed during Golden Week?

Do not assume a blanket national port closure. Port, terminal, feeder, trucking and support arrangements vary by location and operator.

What is a blank sailing?

A blank sailing is a scheduled voyage position removed from the network. Cargo can be moved to another service, but departure, routing and cut-offs can change.

How many Transpacific blank sailings are planned next week?

Drewry’s 24 September update says 15 have been announced, up from nine in the current week.

Which Maersk Asia–Europe sailings are affected?

Maersk lists AE15 from Qingdao on 28 September, AE12 from Ningbo on 8 October and AE1 from Shanghai on 10 October.

Will Golden Week make container rates rise?

Not necessarily. Capacity is being removed, but demand also falls. Drewry expects rates to decline in the following week despite more blank sailings.

Why is 2026 especially tight for exporters?

Mid-Autumn Festival falls on 25–27 September, leaving only 28–30 September as normal weekdays before Golden Week begins.

What should importers check first?

Factory cargo-ready date, live vessel status, alternative sailings, feeder availability, empty pickup, gate-in, SI/VGM deadlines and local origin-port notices.

Primary Sources and Verification

Updated 25 September 2026. Carrier schedules can change quickly around Golden Week. Verify the live carrier schedule, local origin-port notices and shipment-specific cut-offs before relying on a published voyage, feeder connection or document deadline.
